History; Grace and Jacob met when they were then young, she from a strict Christian family, and he from an abusive drunken home, with an angry father and a silently victimized mother. Still young, at nineteen and seventeen, they thought they were older, and quickly their relationship became an addiction. And like an addiction, it had to remain secret, because her family considered any romance outside of marriage a sin, and Jacob’s father was simply against his son earning any forms of independence.
Problems arose when, against all odds, Grace found herself pregnant at the tender age of eighteen. It seemed like a miracle of the worst kind, and she quickly found herself disowned by a furious and embarrassed family. Alone, she and Jake found themselves in a bad situation, and it was simply her beliefs that kept her from having an abortion. Jacob worked at odd end (and often illegal) jobs to keep them in a small apartment, and Grace went regularly to small, free clinics.
On Christmas day, a girl was born. And a boy. Seraphim Aethionema and Samael Othello. Sera and Sam, for short, because most did not recognize the exceedingly old fashioned names. In any case, the twins were born into a difficult, but somewhat normal family life until their father, unhappy with a mediocre life in his words, left to pursue bigger and brighter dreams.
“Don’t think of coming back here with those children. I have no intention of taking you in.” Shunned by her family and stuck alone with two small children of just past their second year, Grace was left with no options but working odd jobs, switching apartments and skipping out on rents until she had set up a financial base for her family. However, in her mind, anger ended up directed at her two children, who made it difficult for her to live comfortably, and in her mind, cost her both her husband and her family. And likewise, that rage grew to encompass Jacob as well, for leaving her in this situation.
Sam and Sera grew in a home where negligence was a blessing, and any mention of their father would earn them days of the silent treatment on end. They grew in a home where providing for themselves was a necessity and where verbal landmines where set through any conversation where the wrong words could earn them cruel and harsh words and cold stares.
When she was thirteen, Sera searched through the files in her mother’s room and found the birth certificate for her and her brother, and finding their father’s name, sought to search him out. By the time they was fourteen, already enrolled in Hogwarts, she ran away from home, leaving him there. Sam had tried to talk his sister out of leaving, but in the end was left with his mother, furious at being left and more than willing to take out her feelings of rage and frustration on the child who still remained.
Sam began to notice, both in school and from her letters, that something was wrong with Sera. She didn’t sound herself, almost hopeless, and he pleaded with her for the address where she was living with their father. He found her slightly hysterical, on edge, eager to please if it meant that she would receive a kind word, but nervous, as though expecting only harsh tones. By the time Sam had found out and dragged her home, she was almost sixteen and had no idea who to turn to except for her twin. The same night she sobbed herself to sleep on his shoulder, Sam sent an owl to the Ministry, begging them for a place to stay. The Statute of Secrecy kept them from being placed in a muggle home, but they were sent to foster parents who were magical and looked after them well. And they still currently reside there, having refused to be separated, until they can legally move out.
Appearance; When they were younger, Sam and Sera looked a good deal more like twins than they do now. Age has made it harder to tell that they share not only parents, but the same date of birth. Instead, most people assume that Sam is the older sibling, due to his height and also the way that Sera seems to look up to him. Well, he is older. By eight minutes.
Sam is taller than his sister, at five feet ten inches, which isn’t much for a boy, but he’s only sixteen yet. He’s sure he’ll end up growing. They have the same coloring, dark brown hair and eyes, pale skin, and Sam has the same rounded nose as her. His hair, though, is disheveled, usually, and hanging around his face in a pleasant mop. Generally, he has a wide smile on his face and though he doesn’t make any effort to play up his looks, he is handsome.
Outside of his robes, and God does he hate wearing those robes, Sam’s style leans more towards jeans, old and torn up at the knees. Sneakers are preferable, and he has a couple pairs of Converses he adores wearing when he’s allowed to. He’s been buying himself band shirts from the thrift store for years, but he will cover them with a button up shirt to look slightly more respectable. He hates dressing up, though, and if someone told him he’d be able to spend every day in a ratty band shirt, bad jeans, and socks, he might celebrate.
Personality; Sera might have been sorted into Ravenclaw with good reason, but Sam is the generic Gryffindor. Over the years some of his sister’s common sense has bled down, but not much. He started out second year by breaking his arm on a broom because he hadn’t tried flying before and it “looked fun.” That misadventure earned him much teasing from his sister and a spot on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
Though somewhat quiet at first, Sam is pleasant and friendly to most everyone, with notable few exceptions. Anyone who seems permanently with their nose in the air or the type who think purebloods are the only people worth anyone’s time annoy him. Not least of all because he hardly counts as a human being to them, being a muggleborn. Sam is the type to have lots of acquaintances, a few close friends, and still come off as nice to anyone.
Though referred to as “stupidity” by some, Sam does enjoy living on the edge a little, the prime example being jumping on a broom before he knew how to fly. He doesn’t worry about things much, or over think, instead choosing to dive in if there’s a chance for a good time. Likewise, Sam has a firm belief in right and wrong and won’t hesitate to act on it out of fear or uncertainty. He immediately signed onto the Ministry’s side in the coming blood war, knowing that his life would not be worth living if the Ministry should lose anyway.
