This couldn't be happening.
"Kallie, Maman wants you to be a bridesmaid in her vow renewal ceremony."
"...What?" Blinking at her older sister, Kallie felt an old wound threaten to tear open again. Victorie knew better than to mention their mother around her, after all. She knew that it hurt too much for the younger girl.
"Maman and Daddy are renewing their vows," Victorie said with a smile, though she hid the smile after a moment. Kallie probably wouldn't be very happy about her parents renewing their vows, after all. "And Maman doesn't want a big wedding party. She just wants her children and their escorts. Which includes you. She told me to give you this." Victorie handed her sister an envelope. "The invitation's inside, as well as a hand-written request from her. She really wants you there, Kallie." Victorie paused. "I'm the maid of honor. Maman said the color we're wearing is gold and--" She cut herself off as her younger sister stood up, and she frowned. "Kallie, that's rude. I'm in the middle of speakin--"
Kallie casually ripped the envelope in half, casting Victorie a sicky-sweet smile. "Tell Maman to shove it," she said cheerfully, fixing her skirt. "And that the next time I'll see her is when we're in hell."
Kalypso Malfoy had thought that had been the end of it. She would not go to her mother's vow renewal, would not have to see the woman that had haunted her memories for years, and that was that. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Things rarely went as planned for the youngest Malfoy girl, and she truly hated that fact.
Perhaps it was because she had a soft spot for Victorie. Vicky had always been too sweet, too naive, and Kallie felt bad when she hurt her. So when Vicky had looked hurt and had begged ("Please Kallie? If not for her, do it for me?"), Kallie had caved and agreed. She did not, however, agree to be civil. And said that she would have to be the one to choose her escort.
Victorie had talked to their mother and had said that she could bring whoever she pleased as her escort, as long as they followed the dress code. Kallie then sulked for a few days, because that meant that she would actually have to go through with this. She would have to face her mother for the first time in five or so years, and she hated that fact. She had never wanted to see that woman again, though unfortunately, she had to.
Then came along the issue of actually having to find an escort. Victorie had suggested that Kallie bring Jeremy, and Kallie had quite literally choked on whatever she was eating at that suggestion. She had dumped Jeremy months before; Victorie knew that. While she still had feelings for him (Victorie also knew that, unfortunately),being seeing in public with him was too great of a risk, so that idea went out the window. She briefly dabbled with the idea of bringing Calhoun, though Nate (who was apparently dating Kallie's younger sister, Dominique) had openly blanched at the idea of him being there. Kallie decided against it for that reason, though also knew that he would probably just cause a scene like he always managed to do. Trevor would downright refuse because he hated the Weasleys and didn't love Kallie enough to give into her pouts. Damian would probably go into schizo-mode (as she called it, anyway) and end up killing one of the Ministry idiots there, or her Uncle Percy would have him arrested upon sight. So, that left one person in her eyes.
Asking her brother did not work. He had downright refused. Her pouts only got her so far, her wide eyes only a little bit farther. Begging him almost worked, though he truly did not like the Weasleys at all. Even though she was Kallie and he'd do anything for her, there was clearly a limit. She would have to try harder if she really wanted him to go with her, which he did. She tried everything she could think of for a while, but nothing had worked. It required some..creative thinking (
Looking in the mirror to see the final product of three hour's work, Kallie resisted the urge to cringe (which she never did when it came to her opinion)She had always hated the way the color gold looked on her. Victorie had specified that she and Dom were to wear a more 'yellow-gold,' and that made it even worse to her. She had taken the time to find a dress in a style that she liked, and had a feeling that she would end up charming it a different color as soon as the night was over. She had always looked better in darker colors, in her own opinion, though she supposed it didn't look too bad. She could pull off brighter colors, after all, and it was a bit bright. Her mother should have known better -- she was part Veela as well, and dealt with the pale skin just as much as she did. Pale and yellow or gold generally did not mix.
The style of the dress and every thing else she was wearing was very Kallie, however. The dress was silk and smooth to the touch, the material reaching mid-thigh. A bow tapered the waist in, showing off her thin waist and showing how her curves were nearly flawless in the way the flowed out, the neckline at a perfect spot. The dress was strapless, clinging tightly to her chest in a way that she deemed perfect. Gold heels brought her up to about five-foot-six, which she wasn't very happy with. Her sisters were both taller than she, so she had to wear higher heels to make her taller. If they wore heels as well, which was likely, she was going to feel very tiny again, which she did not like at all. A gold necklace her brother had given her for her last birthday fell perfectly on her chest, matching the color of the clip holding her hair back almost perfectly.
She brushed the absent, straightened lock that she'd left loose away from bright blue eyes lined in black with a sigh. It was nearly time to go, and she needed to leave soon otherwise she was going to simply stand everyone waiting up. She didn't want to do this, but she had to. So, after storing her wand, her lipgloss, and a few other..select items into her purse (convincing Cal to wear a suit jacket had taken some creative thinking as well), she called for her brother and left her room.
Seeing her extended family again was more hellish than she had expected. Apparently, some of the family had liked her, and gushed over how pretty she'd grown to be and over how much she looked like her mother. She accepted it all with polite smiles, though Cal had probably noticed that her fingernails were digging into his hand or forearm whenever that compliment was given.
The ceremony had gone by quick enough. She had to resist shooting her mother a glare as she watched her walk down the aisle, and had simply averted her gaze to avoid doing so. At least she had a few people there that she liked. Cal and Vicky would get her through this, and she'd never been on horrible terms with her younger brother Louis, either. She could deal with Dominique if she absolutely had to. Other than that, she wouldn't care if a meteor hit the damned place and they all died. Hopefully her mother would be first to go down in the blaze. She had almost snickered at the thought of that, though had composed herself quickly.
As the ceremony ended and they were brought inside, Kallie grimaced as she noticed about a million people had brought out cameras. "Just smile through this for me," she mumbled to her brother, absently linking her arm through this. "We only have to deal with it for...a few hours." Oh, she was going to kill herself.
