History; Grace and Jacob met when they were then young, she from a strict Christian family, and he from an abusive drunken home, with an angry father and a silently victimized mother. Still young, at nineteen and seventeen, they thought they were older, and quickly their relationship became an addiction. And like an addiction, it had to remain secret, because her family considered any romance outside of marriage a sin, and Jacob’s father was simply against his son earning any forms of independence.
Problems arose when, against all odds, Grace found herself pregnant at the tender age of eighteen. It seemed like a miracle of the worst kind, and she quickly found herself disowned by a furious and embarrassed family. Alone, she and Jake found themselves in a bad situation, and it was simply her beliefs that kept her from having an abortion. Jacob worked at odd end (and often illegal) jobs to keep them in a small apartment, and Grace went regularly to small, free clinics.
On Christmas day, a girl was born. And a boy. Seraphim Aethionema and Samael Othello. Sera and Sam, for short, because most did not recognize the exceedingly old fashioned names. In any case, the twins were born into a difficult, but somewhat normal family life until their father, unhappy with a mediocre life in his words, left to pursue bigger and brighter dreams.
“Don’t think of coming back here with those children. I have no intention of taking you in.” Shunned by her family and stuck alone with two small children of just past their second year, Grace was left with no options but working odd jobs, switching apartments and skipping out on rents until she had set up a financial base for her family. However, in her mind, anger ended up directed at her two children, who made it difficult for her to live comfortably, and in her mind, cost her both her husband and her family. And likewise, that rage grew to encompass Jacob as well, for leaving her in this situation.
Sam and Sera grew in a home where negligence was a blessing, and any mention of their father would earn them days of the silent treatment on end. They grew in a home where providing for themselves was a necessity and where verbal landmines where set through any conversation where the wrong words could earn them cruel and harsh words and cold stares.
When she was thirteen, Sera searched through the files in her mother’s room and found the birth certificate for her and her brother, and finding their father’s name, sought to search him out. By the time she was fourteen, already enrolled in Hogwarts with her brother, she ran away from home, leaving him there. It took her an age to find her father, and when she did, she found the first form of parental love she had ever known.
However, she’d never learned that since adults don’t always act as they should, and Sera’s father attempted to use the magical world to his own advantage. His moods would shift from loving when he needed something to not much caring when he didn’t need her. By the time Sam had found out and dragged her home, she was almost sixteen and had no idea who to turn to except for her twin. The same night she sobbed herself to sleep on his shoulder, Sam sent an owl to the Ministry, begging them for a place to stay. The Statute of Secrecy kept them from being placed in a muggle home, but they were sent to foster parents who were magical and looked after them well. And they still currently reside there, having refused to be separated, until they can legally move out.
Appearance; Seraphim has always felt herself to be plain looking, the combination of years of negligence and abuse, but in fact, she in a pretty girl. Despite her low self-esteem, or perhaps because of it, she attempt to play up her looks with make-up and nice clothes.
Both her hair and eyes are a dark brown. She wears the locks long and naturally a little wavy, though she occasionally takes the time to straighten them. When she was younger, she dyed the front, framing her face white and then later, red, but now at sixteen, she keeps it her natural color for simplicities sake.
Her face is oval shaped, with soft curves around her cheekbones and chin. Sera hates her nose, which she considers to round, along with her front two teeth, where she has a gap still from when she was a child and her mother couldn’t (or wouldn’t) put up the money for braces. Her lips, though, are soft and full, heart shaped in every regard, and when she smiles, her face always seems to light up.
In size, she is average in most regards, standing at a general five feet six and a half inches, and her weight leaving her slender, but not skinny. She likes to dress up, too look really nice, and even attempts to do so when dressing casually. Her skin is fair, emphasizing her dark eyes and hair that much more.
Personality; Sera was sorted into Ravenclaw for a reason. She is exceptionally bright, and earns near top grades and plans on attempting to work her way into the Ministry as soon as she gets out of school. Her ambition might’ve landed her in Slytherin, but for the fact that she’d had very few ambitions when she was younger and held a general dislike of Slytherin house.
On meeting Sera, she comes off as shy on a good day, cold or unfriendly on a bad day. It’s not intentional, but she tends to be quiet. She doesn’t know exactly how to interact with other people and is more than happily to stay quietly behind her brother, never saying a word. It might not make her the life of the party, but she’s most comfortable that way.
As far as boys go, she has a general distrust of them. She’s dated one or two boys, but no one who was really serious about her or her about him. More of a friendly way to pass the time. It’s hard for her to get close to anyone romantically because she’s seen how bad relationships can go, from her father who doesn’t even think about her mother, to her mother who at any mention of her father becomes passively violent. It’s easy to wonder if love might not be worth it.
In general, she only pretends to like most people because she believes it’s what’s expected of her. When, really, she believes most people aren’t on the same wave length as her. The only person she feels exceedingly close to is Sam, and when upset, she has a tendency to shadow him (which leads to him laughing, and agreeing to skip a class or two with her).
