The stars had never been particularly interesting to her. She always had trouble finding the constellations and tracing their patterns, and it frustrated her to no end for years. To her, the night sky was a black canvas splattered with lights, and they really did nothing for her. The stories were pretty, though overly cliche, and she could most likely recite them all from memory thanks to a special someone. However, the memories that came along with those stars were what she held dear. If they fell from the sky, she would be heartbroken for other reasons than the actual loss of the stars.
♥
"What can you see?" She asks, turning towards her brother with blue eyes that reflect the heavens above them. He takes her smaller hand in his, tracing the invisible lines between the stars to show the pattern, watching as she frowns and tries to see it.
"Orion," he says, watching still as she re-traces the pattern of his belt. "The Hunter." Those blue eyes fall on him again, and he can almost see what she expects in her eyes. "Tell me the story," she demands a moment later. She hears him sigh and watches him roll his eyes, though he complies and starts the tale.
She curls up against him, feeling warm and safe in the hold of her older brother. The sound of his voice almost lulls her to sleep, though when he finally finishes his story, she peeks one eye open to look at him again. "Tell me the story about my name," she says, voice strung out and tired. "Please?" Cal knows that that very story had always been her favorite, and always will be. He launches into the second story, knowing this will probably be the one to put her to sleep.
Calpyso had been a nymph unfortunate enough to fall in love with Odysseus. She kept him on her island for several years, ignored his pleas to return him, and begged him to stay forever with her and love her like he did his wife. He would have none of it, and eventually, Zeus demanded his release. She let him go with a heavy heart, though dared not defy the almighty god.
As Cal finishes the tale, he can hear his sister's breathing lighten and he scoops her up with ease, intending to put her to bed.
Calypso had died eventually; she withered away. However, Cal leaves that part out. His little sister does not need to know that her namesake died from a broken heart.
♥
Time goes by fast.
Kallie starts Hogwarts and is sorted into Slytherin, much to her brother's approval. This way he can see her every day and keep an eye on her. He is all too aware of the fact that his little sister is growing up and maturing in every way and almost wishes he could freeze time to keep her where she is.
She starts getting more friends and starts to spend more time with them. She starts going to parties with an older crowd. Older boys start paying attention to her, as she started physically maturing early because of her mother's genes. All of this (especially the last part) is over-whelming, as she's still his baby sister in his eyes.
However, she still has time for him. When he is in and she isn't busy or vice versa, she'll still crawl up beside him and curl up in his hold and ask him what he sees, and ask him if he can tell the stories she's had memorized for years. He does, as he will do anything for her, and she is comfortable and feels so safe and protected. She feels as if she will never want to pull away, and hopes that feeling will remain.
He has always been there, and she is convinced that, no matter how old she gets, she will adore him and love him more than anybody. Her biggest fear is losing him.
Moments like these define her. Kallie is positive they will never come to an end.
♥
Things change. People change.
As Kallie grows, her personality changes. While she has never been perfect or the epitome of 'sweet,' she never has been outright mean to any one who does not deserve it. She grows apart from Cal and starts becoming close friends with a crowd he does not approve of, a crowd that involves sex and drinking and drugs. She grows to be more interested in boys, her Veela nature shining through more than it ever has. Cal is almost forgotten; pushed the the side for more fun things.
She lives to be the center of attention, to be at the top. While she has always been the center of his attention, the very core to his Earth, it is no longer good enough. She needs more attention, more adoration, than he can offer, and he starts to be annoyed with how she acts. They start fighting more and more, and she just wants to rip her hair out. At first she feels guilty, though later as the fights get worse, she stops caring.
She notices changes in him as well, or starts to pick up on things she never noticed before. He is with the same group of friends, and does the things she avoids doing. He smokes like a chimney and does heavy drugs, and the thought of him doing both make her sick to her stomach. She steals his cigarettes and drugs and hopes he will blame the crimes on someone else in his dorm and not suspect her.
The fighting reaches a new peak, and she wants almost nothing to do with him. He is too protective, too over-bearing. He is suffocating her.
The first time she says she hates him, it breaks her heart.
It gets easier as time goes on.
♥
Age is a high price to pay for maturity.
As Kallie grows, she realizes her flaws and tries to embrace or fix them. Those who are bold enough to point them out to her are thanked in her heart, though given harsh remarks and sneers on the outside. However, she tries and finds that changing is difficult, and is more trouble than it is worth.
She begins to hate herself.
She tries to take her life, and he is the one that finds her. He is the one she writes the letter to, and she wishes he will never read it. While they fight and scream, Cal is still her brother, and he is still her world. She loves Jeremy, yes, though Cal easily slides into first place before him.
She has been acting stupid. She has pushed away the one person she always needs, the one person that has always been there. The one person she loves more than anything. How could she have done this when he is all she needs?
♥
She wants to feel whole.
She continues to date Jeremy, though it feels like there is something missing. There is a place in her heart that is empty, and when she thinks of what belongs there, she feels sick with herself. It is wrong and disgusting. He will hate her if he knows. Or at least that is what she thinks.
She wishes that her boyfriend will fill the empty space in her heart and make her feel whole, though no matter what he says or does, it remains. She claims to love him with all of her heart and soul, though it's a lie. Saying she loves him is not a lie, not at all, though her whole heart does not belong to him. A good portion belongs to someone else, and she hates herself more than that. Jeremy, however, will do. He is a good match for her, and he makes her happy.
Forbidden love never ends well.
She is forced to break up with him and forbidden to see him, and it is almost unbearable. The empty space in her heart is made more evident than ever, and she just wants to curl up and die. She sneaks out to see Jeremy, and Cal calls her foolish. She tells him he does not know what it is like to love someone he cannot be with. He does not know she isn't talking about Jeremy.
♥
Draco discovers Kallie is sneaking around, and arranges her to marry someone to keep her in control. As she is a free spirit, she throws a fit, all to no avail. She trashes her room, desperate for a release, though none comes. She does not know how to express her pain, how to get what she wants.
It isn't the thought of losing Jeremy that scares her. There is someone else she is terrified of losing.
All of a sudden, everything is all too clear.
Jeremy has always been replacement, as much as she will deny it. Yes, she loves him, though not completely. He has been there because there is someone else she's always wanted but could not have because it is wrong and dirty. However, something inside of her tells her that it is right, even if her brain screams 'No!'
Someone else has always been everything she has wanted and needed, and everything she could not have. It isn't fair, though nothing has ever been fair to her. Why should things start now?
♥
"Is that Orion?" She asks as she lays down next to her brother, watching the end of his cigarette glow in the dark. She has heard the screaming between him and her father, and wishes to see if he is alright. In the moonlight she sees the faint beginnings of a bruise beneath one eye, and guilt fills her stomach. She does not get a response, only a shrug, and that only adds to her suspicion.
"The fight was about me, wasn't it?" She asks, though does not take her eyes off of the sky where she thinks she sees Orion's belt. "Not everything is about you, Princess," he replies, remark biting, though does not directly deny it.
"It's my battle to fight, Cal," she says, finally looking away from the stars to look at him. She sighs, saying aloud her thoughts: "There's just someone I'm afraid of losing---." Before she can finish, he cuts her off. "You're still hung up on him?" Anger colors his tone, and he sits up quickly. "You're still going to sneak out to see him, too, aren't you? How do you not see the fucking risk your taking? It's been bad from the start, though now it's just dangerous. Jesus, Kallie, are you stupid?"
Although she wants to snap back and be mean, she cannot.
The dam breaks.
"Who says it's Jeremy that I'm afraid of losing? Cal, it's you, it's always been you."
♥
After her sobs quiet down, she is curled up against Cal and covered with his coat. "Can you tell me the story about Orion?" She murmurs, though her eyes are closed and she seems to almost be asleep. "Don't you have it memorized by now?" Her eyes open and a small pout tugs on her lips. Rolling his eyes, he rambles off the story for her again, sighing a bit as he starts. She smiles to herself and curls into him more, happily comforted by the sound of his voice.
She is seemingly asleep when it stops, and he looks down at her and is surprised to see her eyes open. "A shooting star," she whispers, pointing towards the falling mass. She shifts a bit, blue eyes meeting his gray. "Wanna grant me my wish?" "Hm?" He looks mildly confused. "What is it?"
This is when she kisses him, and it seems to drag on for an eternity - soft and sweet and everything she wants. It may be so wrong, though in her heart, it is right.
